Marketing Audit: Find What Is Wasting Money Before You Spend More

A marketing audit is a paid diagnosis of how your marketing actually works: website, search, ads, tracking, and follow-up. You get written findings and a ranked list of what to fix first. It is not a sales deck, and it is not the free SEO analysis tool.

Most businesses do not need a bigger retainer yet. They need to know whether the current site can convert, whether ads are pointed at the right offer, and whether leads die after the form submit.

Skyfall Digital Media sells this as a standalone project. You can take the report and run it yourself, hire another vendor, or continue into a strategy sprint or fractional CMO seat. No required next contract.

What is a marketing audit?

A marketing audit is a structured review of the system that is supposed to create customers. It answers four questions:

  1. Where do leads and revenue actually come from today?
  2. What is broken, missing, or unmeasured?
  3. What is costing money without producing pipeline?
  4. What should you do in the next 90 days — and what should you stop?

A digital marketing audit covers the stack most small businesses actually use: website, Google Business Profile / local search, organic SEO, paid media, analytics, and intake. An SEO audit is one slice of that. A paid media audit is another slice. A marketing strategy audit looks at whether the offer, market, and message can support the spend at all.

If you only want a technical crawl of titles and speed, use the free tool. If you want to know whether to hire an agency, raise ad spend, or rebuild the site, buy the audit.

What is included in a marketing audit?

Scope is confirmed in writing before work starts. A typical Skyfall marketing audit includes:

Business and offer
Who you sell to, what you sell, average job or case value, sales cycle, and whether the current offer can support the cost of a lead.

Website and conversion
Homepage and key landing pages, mobile usability, form and call paths, proof, speed issues that affect conversion, and whether the page matches the ads or search terms sending traffic.

SEO and local visibility
Indexation, on-page targeting, internal links, and local presence where it matters (Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, and other service areas). This is an SEO audit inside the larger review, not a standalone ranking project.

Paid media
Account structure, targeting, landing-page match, tracking, and wasted spend — if you run ads. If you do not, we say whether you should.

Tracking and follow-up
GA4 / Search Console / ad pixels, call tracking if present, CRM or inbox follow-up, and where leads disappear after they convert.

Competitive snapshot
How you show up next to the firms and businesses a buyer actually compares you to — not a 40-page industry report.

Deliverable
A written report plus a short working session. Priorities are ranked: fix now, fix this quarter, ignore.

You will not get a generic “marketing audit checklist” PDF with 200 unchecked boxes. You will get the ten things that change the next dollar you spend.

The tool can start a conversation. It cannot tell you if your market can support $8,000/month in ads, or if the real leak is the sales follow-up.

Do I need a marketing audit before hiring an agency?

Yes, if you cannot explain what is working. Agencies get paid to produce. If the brief is “do SEO and ads,” you will buy activity against an untested bet.

Buy the audit first when:

  • You already spend and cannot name cost per lead or cost per customer
  • A previous agency produced reports, not pipeline
  • You are choosing between a new site, more ads, or an in-house hire
  • Leads come in and then go quiet
  • You want marketing consulting but do not know which offer to buy

Skip the audit only when the problem is already narrow and proven — for example, “the site converts; we need more of the same traffic.” That is an execution brief, not a diagnostic.

How much does a marketing audit cost?

Skyfall marketing audits run $3,000–$8,000.

Price moves with:

  • Number of sites and locations
  • Whether paid media accounts are in scope
  • Quality of existing analytics access
  • How many offers and service lines need review

A small local service business with one site and light ad spend sits toward the low end. A multi-location firm or a messy ad account with poor tracking sits toward the high end.

Market context: a serious digital marketing audit for a small business is rarely a $299 product. Those are crawls. A useful audit takes senior time in the accounts, on the site, and on the phone with whoever handles leads.

After the audit, typical next buys are:

  • 90-day strategy sprint — $8,000–$18,000 — if you need the plan built out
  • Fractional CMO — $5,000–$12,000/month — if you need someone to run the plan
  • Agency execution through our services — only if the audit says production is the constraint

Marketing audit checklist (what we actually inspect)

Use this as the working list. If another firm’s “checklist” stops at meta tags, it is an SEO crawl.

  • Offer, geography, and economics of a new customer
  • Current traffic, leads, and (if you have it) close rate for the last 90 days
  • Website paths: home, service pages, location pages, contact
  • Forms, click-to-call, and after-hours handling
  • Technical blockers: indexation, major speed or mobile failures
  • Search terms you win, lose, or pay for
  • Local pack / Maps visibility where relevant
  • Paid search or paid social structure and landing-page match
  • Conversion tracking: what the platforms claim vs what the business records
  • Lead handling: speed to first response, qualification, no-show rate
  • What to stop this month

Who this audit is for

  • Small and mid-sized businesses with a live site and some marketing spend
  • Professional firms, including law firms, that need demand generation rather than another brochure
  • Owners in Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, Courtland, and the rest of Virginia who want a local operator
  • Remote clients who can grant analytics and ad-account access

If you are pre-revenue and still defining the product, a shorter advisory call may be enough. Say that on the fit call; we will not sell an $8,000 audit into a problem that does not need one.

How the engagement works

  1. Fit call (30 minutes). Confirm the problem, access, and whether an audit is the right first buy. Book it.
  2. Scope and price. Written range inside $3,000–$8,000, with what is in and out.
  3. Access. Site, Search Console, analytics, ad accounts, and a walkthrough of how leads are handled.
  4. Review. Diagnosis first. Recommendations second.
  5. Readout. Written report plus a working session. You keep the document either way.

Ryan C. Duke leads the audit. He co-founded Skyfall in 2018 and works from the technical side: sites, search, tracking, and systems. You are not handed a junior checklist.

After the audit

You decide. Common paths:

Consulting stays separate from execution. If the audit says pause ads and fix the site, that is the recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a marketing audit?
A paid review of how your marketing system creates customers: website, search, ads, tracking, and follow-up. The output is priorities, not a stack of channel ideas.

How much does a marketing audit cost?
At Skyfall, $3,000–$8,000 depending on sites, ad accounts, and access. Quotes below that band are usually automated crawls.

What is included in a marketing audit?
Offer and economics, website conversion, SEO and local visibility, paid media if you run it, tracking, lead handling, and a ranked action list. Details are scoped before work starts.

Do I need a marketing audit before hiring an agency?
If you cannot explain what is working, yes. Otherwise you are hiring production against an untested plan.

Is this the same as an SEO audit?
SEO is included. The marketing audit also covers strategy, paid media, conversion, and what happens after the lead arrives.

Is this the same as the free SEO analysis?
No. The free SEO analysis is a tool. This page is the paid diagnostic.

How long does it take?
Usually 10–15 business days after we have access. Faster if accounts are clean; slower if tracking is missing and has to be reconstructed.

Can I buy the audit and not hire Skyfall afterward?
Yes. The report is yours.
