Marketing Consulting for Businesses That Need a Plan, Not Another Vendor

A marketing consultant tells you what to do, in what order, and what not to waste money on. Skyfall Digital Media provides marketing consulting as a separate offer from our agency work: paid diagnosis, a fixed-scope strategy sprint, or ongoing fractional leadership. You can use us for thinking only, or hand execution to our team after the plan is set.

Most companies do not need a bigger agency retainer first. They need someone senior enough to decide where the budget should go.

What does a marketing consultant do?

A marketing consultant diagnoses the business, sets priorities, and owns the strategy. Execution may stay in-house, go to an agency, or come back to Skyfall after the plan is approved.

In a typical engagement we:

  • Identify who you should sell to first, and which offers actually convert
  • Map the current funnel: site, search, ads, email, sales follow-up
  • Separate work that creates pipeline from work that only creates activity
  • Set a 90-day sequence with owners, budget, and success metrics
  • Decide what to stop. Most plans fail because too many channels stay half-alive

We do not sell “more content” or “more ads” as the default answer. If the website cannot convert, paid traffic is expensive. If follow-up is slow, lead gen is wasted. Consulting starts at the constraint.

When to hire a marketing consultant

Hire a consultant when one of these is true:

  • You are spending on marketing and cannot explain what is working
  • You are choosing between an agency, an in-house hire, and doing it yourself
  • You launched a site or campaign and leads are weak, expensive, or unqualified
  • The owner is still the de facto CMO and that is blocking growth
  • You need a plan before you sign a $5,000–$15,000/month execution retainer
  • You already have a team or agency and need someone to direct them

Do not hire a consultant if you only want posts published or ads turned on. That is execution. Use our agency services for that, or hire us to write the plan first and then decide who implements it.

Marketing consultant vs agency

Skyfall can be either. That is useful only if the two offers stay separate. Consulting is not a disguised pitch for a larger retainer. If the audit says pause ads and fix the site, that is the recommendation.

How much does a marketing consultant cost?

In the U.S. market, independent marketing consultants commonly charge $75–$250/hour for mid-level strategy work and $150–$400/hour for senior or fractional leadership. Monthly retainers for small and mid-sized businesses typically run $3,000–$12,000. Project work such as audits and strategy sprints often lands between $3,000 and $18,000.

Skyfall prices consulting as products, not open-ended hours:

  • Audit: $3,000–$8,000. One-time. Findings, priorities, and a recommended next engagement.
  • Strategy sprint: $8,000–$18,000. Fixed window. Positioning, channel plan, 90-day roadmap, measurement.
  • Fractional CMO: $5,000–$12,000 per month for about 10–15 hours of senior leadership. Scope is written. Unused hours do not roll unless we agree in writing.
  • Light advisory retainer: $3,000–$7,000 per month for businesses that already have a team or agency and need a senior reviewer.

A full-time marketing director in this market often costs $120,000–$180,000 plus benefits. A fractional seat is the right buy when you need leadership two or three days a week, not a department.

If a quote comes in far below these bands, you are usually buying junior execution labeled as consulting.

Who this is for

Skyfall marketing consulting is built for owners and operators who need a senior marketer without hiring one full-time:

  • Local and regional service businesses in Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, and the rest of Virginia
  • Professional firms, including law firms that already know they need demand generation, not just a brochure site
  • Established small businesses ($500k–$10M) that have a website and some spend, but no operating system for marketing
  • Companies outside Virginia that want remote advisory with a technical operator, not a slide-deck consultancy

If you are pre-revenue and still defining the product, a short audit may be enough. If you have spend, a team, or an agency already in motion, start with the sprint or a fractional seat.

How an engagement works

  1. Fit call (30 minutes). We confirm the problem, budget range, and whether consulting or execution is the right first buy. Book it here.
  2. Scope. You get a written offer: audit, sprint, or fractional CMO, with price, hours, and deliverables.
  3. Access. Analytics, ad accounts, CRM or intake process, current site, and last 90 days of results.
  4. Work. Diagnosis first. Recommendations second. No 40-page deck that cannot be acted on in the next two weeks.
  5. Decision. You keep the plan and run it internally, hire Skyfall to execute, or continue into a retainer. No required next contract.

Ryan C. Duke leads consulting engagements. He co-founded Skyfall in 2018, holds an M.S. in Management, and works from the technical side of marketing: sites, search, tracking, and systems. You are not handed off to an account coordinator for the strategy.

What you get that generic consulting leaves out

Most “digital marketing consultants” recycle channel checklists. The useful work is deciding the constraint.

We look at:

  • Whether the offer and geographic market can support the acquisition cost
  • Whether the website can convert the traffic you already have
  • Whether leads die in follow-up
  • Whether SEO, ads, and content are aimed at the same buyer
  • Whether you need a consultant, an agency, a hire, or less marketing until operations catch up

That last point matters. If sales cannot handle more volume, we will not recommend more lead gen.

Hampton Roads and Virginia clients

If you search for a marketing consultant in Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, or Courtland, VA, you will find national platforms and large regional agencies. Skyfall is a boutique. Consulting calls can be remote or local. Implementation, when you want it, is done by the same company that wrote the plan.

Local context we actually use: service-area businesses, professional practices, and owner-operated companies that compete in Google’s local pack and on branded search. We will not pretend every client needs a national content engine.

Remote clients are welcome when the work is strategy, audit, or fractional leadership.

Frequently asked questions

What does a marketing consultant do that an agency does not?
A consultant sets the plan and the order of work. An agency produces the work. If you hire production before strategy, you pay for output against an untested bet.

How much does a marketing consultant cost at Skyfall?
Most clients land in one of three bands: $3,000–$8,000 for an audit, $8,000–$18,000 for a strategy sprint, or $5,000–$12,000 per month for fractional leadership. Advisory-only retainers start around $3,000 per month.

When should a small business hire a marketing consultant?
When the owner can no longer be the marketing department and the next spend decision is large enough to get wrong. A $6,000 audit is cheap compared with a year of the wrong retainer.

Can I hire Skyfall as a consultant and not use the agency?
Yes. The consulting deliverable is yours. Execution can stay in-house, go to another vendor, or come to our team later.

Do you require a long-term contract?
No. Offers are scoped as a project or a month-to-month fractional seat with a written notice period.

Do you only work in Virginia?
No. Strategy, audits, and fractional leadership are remote-friendly. In-person working sessions are available in the Hampton Roads / Virginia Beach area.

Is the free SEO analysis the same as a marketing audit?
No. The free SEO analysis is a tool-based scan. The paid marketing audit covers strategy, funnel, tracking, competitive position, and recommended spend.
