Fractional CMO: Senior Marketing Leadership Without a Full-Time Hire
A fractional CMO is a part-time marketing leader. You buy judgment, priorities, and accountability — usually 10–15 hours a month — instead of a $120,000–$180,000 director or another execution retainer.
Skyfall Digital Media sells fractional marketing leadership as its own product. It is not a disguised agency package. You can keep your current team or vendors. You can also hand named work to our agency services after the plan is set. Execution stays optional.
This sits above a one-off marketing audit and a 90-day strategy sprint. Those produce a diagnosis or a plan. A fractional CMO stays in the seat and runs the plan.
Fractional CMO at a glance

What does a fractional CMO do?
A fractional CMO owns the marketing operating system: what to do, in what order, what to stop, and whether the work is producing pipeline.
In a typical Skyfall seat we:
- Set quarterly priorities and a 30-day focus
- Direct the website, search, ads, and follow-up — even when other people do the tasks
- Review numbers weekly or biweekly: traffic, leads, cost per lead, close rate where you have it
- Decide channel spend and kill work that only creates activity
- Brief designers, SEOs, media buyers, or an internal coordinator
- Sit in on the owner’s decisions when marketing is the bottleneck
We do not default to “more content” or “more ads.” If the site cannot convert, paid traffic is expensive. If follow-up is slow, lead gen is wasted. Leadership starts at the constraint.
A fractional marketing director or part time CMO is the same job under a different label. Outsourced CMO usually means the same thing when the person is senior and accountable. If the offer is junior hours labeled “CMO,” it is not this product.
When to hire a fractional CMO
Hire a fractional CMO when one of these is true:
- The owner is still the marketing department and that is blocking growth
- You have a team or an agency and no one is directing them
- You just finished a sprint or audit and need someone to keep the plan alive
- You are not ready for a $120,000–$180,000 full-time hire plus benefits
- Spend is high enough that a bad quarter costs more than the retainer
- You need a marketing leader two or three days a week, not a department
Do not hire a fractional CMO if you only want posts published or ads turned on. That is execution. Use agency services or an in-house coordinator. Do not hire one if the product, market, or operations cannot support more demand — we will say that on the fit call.
Fractional CMO vs agency
| Fractional CMO | Marketing agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Decide and direct | Produce campaigns and assets |
| You buy | Leadership and priorities | Hours, channels, deliverables |
| Typical monthly cost | $5,000–$12,000 | $5,000–$25,000+ |
| Best fit | No senior marketer in the seat | Strategy is set; you need production |
| Risk if used too early | You pay for advice you will not follow | You pay for activity against the wrong plan |
Skyfall can be either. The offers stay separate. Consulting is not a pitch for a larger production retainer. If the right move is pause ads and fix the site, that is the recommendation.
Longer model comparison: marketing consultant vs agency.
Fractional CMO vs full-time CMO
| Fractional CMO | Full-time CMO / director | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $5,000–$12,000/month | $10,000–$15,000+/month loaded |
| Time in the business | 10–15 hours, focused | 40+ hours, including management overhead |
| Best when | You need leadership, not a department | You have a team that needs a daily boss |
| Ramp | Weeks | Months to hire and onboard |
| Risk | Too little time if the org is large | Too much cost if the org is small |
Most companies between roughly $500k and $10M in revenue need the fractional seat first. Hire full-time when there is a team to manage every day and a budget that can stand the loaded salary. The longer write-up lives on fractional CMO vs full-time CMO.
How much does a fractional CMO cost?
Skyfall fractional CMO retainers run $5,000–$12,000 per month for about 10–15 hours of senior leadership.
Toward $5,000: one offer, one site, a team or vendor already producing, you need direction and reviews.
Toward $12,000: several channels, messy tracking, multiple locations, or the owner needs more time in decisions.
A light advisory retainer ($3,000–$7,000/month) is available when you already have a capable team or agency and only need a senior reviewer. That is not a full fractional CMO seat. We will name which one you are buying.
If a “fractional CMO” quote comes in far below these bands, you are usually buying junior execution with a better title.
Who this is for
- Small and mid-sized businesses that need a marketing leader, not another vendor
- Professional firms that need demand generation run on purpose
- Owners in Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, Courtland, and the rest of Virginia who want a local operator they can sit with
- Companies elsewhere in Virginia and beyond who want remote fractional CMO services with a technical operator — sites, search, tracking, systems
If you are pre-revenue, start with an audit or a short advisory call. A monthly leadership seat is the wrong first buy.
How the engagement works
- Fit call (30 minutes). Confirm the constraint, whether leadership (not only a project) is the right buy, and the hour band. Book it.
- Scope. Written monthly retainer: price inside $5,000–$12,000, hours, meeting cadence, what is in and out.
- Access. Analytics, ad accounts, site, CRM or intake, current vendors.
- Operating rhythm. Monthly priorities, regular reviews, decisions in writing. No 40-page decks that cannot be acted on this week.
- Stay or stop. Month-to-month with notice. You can add execution, keep us in the leadership seat only, or end the retainer. The plan you already have stays yours.

What you get that generic retainers leave out
Most “outsourced CMO” offers recycle a channel checklist. The useful work is deciding the constraint.
We look at whether the offer and market can support the acquisition cost, whether the website can convert the traffic you already have, whether leads die in follow-up, and whether SEO, ads, and content aim at the same buyer. If sales cannot handle more volume, we will not recommend more lead gen.
Fractional CMO in Virginia and Hampton Roads
If you search for a fractional CMO in Virginia or Hampton Roads, you will find national marketplaces and large regional agencies. Skyfall is a boutique. Calls can be remote or local. When you want implementation, it is the same company that is directing the work — not a slide-deck consultancy that disappears after the kickoff.
Local context we actually use: service-area businesses, professional practices, and owner-operated companies that compete in Google’s local pack and on branded search. We will not pretend every client needs a national content engine.
